Spongebob Squarepants Cake For Alex
This year for my son Alex’s 7th birthday I decided to take on the task of creating a Spongebob Squarepants cake.To Alex the cake is always a very important part of the Birthday process. Weeks before his actual birthday we scan websites on the Internet for different cake ideas. I was truly amazed at the work people were doing from their own home…Bravo!
After lots of looking, we decided that Spongebob was what we would go with. Who doesn’t love Spongebob? He’s kind, colorful, and just plain funny. Spongebob started as a 9×13 basic yellow cake in which I shaped in order to give him that special spongy shape. I chose to fill and cover Spongebob with a simple pineapple cream cheese buttercream due to the fact he lives in a pineapple under the sea.
Pineapple Cream Cheese Buttercream
What You’ll Need:
1 8oz package cream cheese
1 stick unsalted butter
1 lunch pack size pineapple in natural juices (or smallest can available)
16 oz powdered sugar
1.) Make sure cream cheese and butter are room temperature. Blend butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy.
2.) Add pineapple and its juices blend until smooth. Slowly add in powdered sugar a little at a time until smooth.
Once the cake was frosted I gave it plenty of time to chill and firm up. Michael’s Craft Stores carry Wilton Gel Food Coloring in numerous colors. It just so happens the also carry a four piece coloring kit if you plan on making something Spongebob! So I was set!
I began to color all of my fondant using a picture of Spongebob as reference. I felt as if I were back in art class making some divine clay sculpture for my mother’s curio cabinet. His body was the first thing to get covered. I used a doll rod to create gentle waves in his top and sides.
I then layered brown on his bottom to create the look of pants, and so on and so on. Eventually it was down to little details like sock stripes and laces on his shoes.
The entire process of baking and decorating was a bit lengthy but so worth it. I was a proud peacock and Alex’s eyes almost popped out of his head when he saw it! Mom saves the day!
